Seminole Electric Charity Bike Ride

The public is invited to join us on Saturday, October 22, 2016 for a day of fun, fellowship, great food and to help raise money for an extremely worthy cause.

For this year's event, we have again chosen as a benefactor, Homes for Our Troops.  Homes for Our Troops (HFOT) is a privately funded 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization building specially adapted, mortgage-free homes nationwide for the most severely injured Veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan. Most of these Veterans have sustained injuries including multiple limb amputations, partial or full paralysis, and/or severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). These homes restore some of the freedom and independence our Veterans sacrificed while defending our country, and enable them to focus on their family, recovery, and rebuilding their lives. Since its inception in 2004, 90% of donations to HFOT have gone to directly support Veterans. HFOT builds these homes where the Veteran chooses to live, and continues its relationship with the Veterans after home delivery to assist them with rebuilding their lives. All homes are built at no cost to the veteran through the generous support of individuals, foundations, and corporate contributors. Homes for Our Troops has received a Four Star Rating from Charity Navigator. Visit their website (www.hfotusa.org) for more information.

The unescorted ride will start at the St Augustine VFW located at 6184 US1, St Augustine, FL 32086 and end at the Sam Hogg Pavilion, located at Seminole Electric. The approximate address for the pavilion is 274 West River Road, Palatka, FL. The VFW will be graciously providing coffee, donuts, and fruit (donation appreciated). The ride will cover 130 miles, with three stops. Registration will begin promptly at 9:45 a.m. Registration will NOT begin until 9:45! First bike out will be 10:00 a.m. with the last bike out at 10:30 a.m. and last bike in by 3:00. Lunch will be cooked by our volunteers, and will be served at 2:30. You will receive a Ride Package which will include a map route and detailed instructions of the run at sign-up at the VFW. There will be prizes for best and worst roll of the dice, and drawings for door prizes. Additional dice roll sheets and 50/50 tickets will be available for sale. The cost is $25.00 per rider which includes, an event t-shirt, one raffle ticket for door prizes, goodie bag, dice roll sheet with instructions, and a meal bracelet for the end of the ride. If you list your e-mail address on the registration form, a confirmation e-mail will be sent.

There are several monuments at the cemetery. The oldest and largest is made of pink Etowah marble. It was erected in 1937 and dedicated to "the memory of those who served their country". Another is a polished granite bench, dedicated to the memory of World War I veterans. A POW/MIA monument is the newest addition, facing the WWI bench.

Made in America: East across the water is Jungle Prada Park, reputed landing site of Panfilo De Narvaez. From that landing in 1528 began ‘the first European exploration of the North American Continent’ (if you don’t count the Vikings, apparently).

The 82nd Airborne Division is an active duty airborne infantry division of the United States Army. It specializes in parachute assault operations into denied areas. Based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, the 82nd Airborne Division is the primary fighting arm of the XVIII Airborne Corps.

The monument is dedicated to all paratroopers and glidermen, living and deceased, who have served during peace or war in the Armed Forces of the United States. Naples (FL) sculptor Andrew McGowan cast and donated the bronze statue of the paratrooper, with the formal dedication made in 1983.

Made in America: Before your visit to Park of Palms, pick up something to go at Gwendolyn’s Café, 2400 1st St #101, 2 blocks to the east. Try the Cuban Sandwich, made famous in the area.

Although the City of Davie has never lost any firefighter or police officer in the line of duty, after the events of 9-11 they felt compelled to honor the efforts of the local fire and police forces. Titled ‘The Davie Protectors’, the bronze statues reflect the dedication of the local forces to the safety of their citizens.

Located within Pine Island Park, the entrance is gated outside the above mentioned access hours.
